Things You Need to Know

Protocol, Conversation and Gestures
The standard handshake is good for all occasions. Close friends may exchange hugs and kisses but those on less familiar terms should stick with the handshake.

You will probably be asked to call someone by their first name shortly after meeting them but wait until you are invited to do so and continue to use his last name until instructed to do otherwise.

Every culture has its idea of what is personal space. Don't be surprised if during conversations Italians get closer to you than you are accustomed to.

Be careful with gestures. Some don't travel well. Innocent gestures that are common back home may get you into real trouble in Italy.. For example, the way some people may signal to designate "two of something" by extending the index and pinky fingers means that you have intimate knowledge of the other person's mate.
The "OK" sign is alson a no-no unless you want to tell an Italian man that he's closer to being a woman than he is a man.

Business Hours
It's been a long time since banks in America closed their doors in the middle of the day for lunch but the pattern continues in Rome. Banks generally open at 8:30 AM and close for lunch at 1:30 PM. They reopen around 2:45 PM, closing for the day at 4:45 PM. Of course, most large banks will have outdoor ATM available around the clock.

Currency
Italy is part of the European Union (EU) and therefore recognizes the Euro as the official currency. To change your foreign currency into Euros go to the banks for the best rate. If convenience is more important than a better rate, you'll find exchange counters at larger hotels and major transportation hubs.

Medicine
All medicines are behind the counter at a traditional Farmacia. The pharmacist will have to get your medicine for you even if it's something as simple as aspirin.

Internet
The city has many cyber cafes plus most hotel offer internet access.

Political Demonstrations
Rome has a busy slate of marches and rallies which can force traffic to travel alternate routes. Check the newspaper.
